Scaling and Root Planing
Scaling and root planing is performed by your hygienist in order to attempt to eliminate the source of periodontal infection. This procedure is specifically for patients that have active periodontal disease. Regular cleanings are not sufficient because they focus on the areas of the tooth that are above the gumline. Scaling and root planing removes the tartar, plaque and bacterial toxins that are in the areas above the gumline.
Scaling and root planing removes the source of infection causing the periodontal disease and helps your gums heal and tighten around your teeth. Sometimes a powdered antibiotic (Arestin)may be used to aid in the healing process. Of course, depending on the progress of your periodontal disease, additional procedures and treatments may be required by your hygienist, dentist or periodontist.
